McAlister Development Company completed building renovations to 359 King Street in 2013. The building’s anchor tenant is Williams-Sonoma. With approximately 250 locations in the US, “Williams-Sonoma, Inc. is the premier specialty retailer of home furnishings and gourmet cookware in the United States.” The upper two floors are also designated for mixed use.
The goal in renovating the historic building was to return what had become a dated, nondescript building to prominence. Not only did the construction return the building to its previous glory, but MDC’s commitment to historic restoration won the “City of Charleston Award for Design Excellence” for its preservation effort and sensitivity to significant architectural and historic details. The building was originally constructed in the mid 1800’s and features three floors totaling 14,000+ SF. Significant effort and expense went into featuring the exposed brick interior walls and preserving the old wooden flooring and framing members.
359 King St. is located in downtown Charleston, SC in the prime retail district comprised of the few blocks along King St. immediately south of Calhoun St. Over the past few years, King Street has gained national recognition as one of the premier shopping districts of the country. The end result of this labor of love is a noteworthy, award winning, renovated building at a premier address.
